I did my PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. My research focused on mathematical modeling of the cell cycle in leukemia and involved experiments with cell lines. During that time, I had to count cells with a hemocytometer so often to track growth that I got tired and decided to build an app, HemocyTap, and share my knowledge on the topic here to help as many people as possible.

I’ve put together an infographic on counting cells with a hemocytometer in 6 easy steps, so for those of you in a hurry or wanting something to get started, give this one a go. Click on the image to see a bigger version. An image is worth a thousand words!

  1. Hi Maria
    Great website – much thanx
We are in the process of developing protocols for our fern spore sampling & counting.
Can I ask the following questin please.
When we add our fern spore suspension onto this slide if we add greater than the 10 ul will this excess just squeeze off to the side?
Or must u only add exactly 10ul?
There may be situations where we may be forced to withdraw more than 10ul when sampling – and please tell us what happens to the excess when we put the cover slip on?
    Much thanx
    Regards
    Paul
